Weekly stills.....

Weekly stills.....

1. Pin cushion colour pop.

2. My green shelf kind of glowing in the afternoon light.

3. I bought this drafting table in from the cold so to speak, it belonged to my great uncle who was an artist, and has been sitting in our garage piled high with stuff.  Much happier here where I can sit an ponder and create up a storm.

4. Same corner of the living room in the winter sun.

5. Finished the blue/green harlequin this week. Yay!  I think it deserves it's own post later in the week.

6. Melbourne wandering on the long weekend.  I love that lady's wooly jacket and fluffy hair.

7+8. Sun, clouds and vineyards on the way home, it is a nice drive back from the city to our spot.

How was your week?

More harlequin experimenting....

Hello!
What are you up to today? I have been having a bit of a restless week, I am having trouble settling at  any one task, I am doing little bits of things and then moving onto something else, not a very productive way to be!  I think I am trying to achieve too much in too short a time and so am not really getting on with anything properly!! Oh well, I guess I will just keep muddling through my days, and hopefully this restless mood will pass.

Anyhoo, onto other more enjoyable crafty matters, I thought you might like to see what I have been playing around with as a side line to my bigger autumn blanket.  I am experimenting to find a way to create a diamond blanket that has all different coloured diamonds using the tapestry crochet technique, instead of rows of the same colour like my last couple of blankets.  I still really love the rows of colours, but would like to have a go at a more patchworked effect with individual colours for the diamonds.  I know I could just crochet lots of diamonds and sew them together, ( I am doing that for another blanket) but I like the nice thick fabric that the tapestry technique creates and also it would be fully reversible instead of having a right and wrong side.  I am sure this has been down before, but I enjoy figuring things out for myself!

So these rectangles are where I'm at.  Each one is a made up of two colours, and when I sew them together I will get a multi coloured diamond pattern!

 \
I am liking how geometric they are looking, I think you could make an interesting blanket just by combining random colours and sewing them together in rows.  Lots of potential with this I think!

But this is what I am going for at the moment, see how I am getting nice big diamonds from the four rectangles when they are placed in this pattern? I'm happy with that!

I have to be careful that I do the colours in the right spots to make this work, but if I do a colour layout on diamond graph paper I should be sweet.

So you see lovely readers, my love affair with all things harlequin goes on!! :)

We will see how this turns out once they are all sewn up......

Doing any experimenting over at your place?

PS. A big hello to all the new people reading this blog, and thank you for all the lovely comments you guys leave me, I really appreciate them.  Everyone is so supportive, encouraging and kind in this creative blogging community!! xxx  I am making a big effort to become a better bloggy
citizen ( I have been slack for too long) and to reply to comments you leave here, so if you leave a comment maybe check back in a day or so and I will hopefully have replied to you!
I have only been doing this for a little while, as I realise I  should really make more effort to communicate other than just my posts, which I kind of see as open letters to you all!
Anyway, it could all fizzle out in a week, but I will try not to be
overwhelmed and to stay on top of things!

I have something nice for you all coming up soon, I hope you like it!

Have a great day!
Talk soon,  J xx

A finished blanket and other random stuff.

Hello.

Things have been pretty busy around here lately, the days are getting away from me and I feel like I am chasing my tail all the time.
I have signed up for an e-course called 'Blog with Pip' of Meet me at Mike's fame, and it has started this week.  It is fabulous, with heaps of great info, but already I feel behind, lots of other students are sharing what they are doing and they are really achieving a lot in a week!  Gotta get my act into gear!!  We are able to interact together through a Facebook page and comments on the course page, but I find myself feeling quite shy and hanging back a bit.  I think I will make myself get more involved, even if it is out of my comfort zone.
I am hoping to give this blog a bit of a make over, you know, new banner, tidier sidebar, better tags to make it easier to find things, that sort of thing.  I am contemplating offering some form of sponsorship down the side, I have seen a lot of blogs recently that have advertising down the side and it doesn't seem to detract from their blogs, and it would be a way for me to contribute to our family finances while still doing the things I love. ( and I would not have to look for work outside home!)
Anyhoo, I have lots of thoughts floating around in my skull at the minute, really must try and sort some of them out!

On the crafty front, I have finished my second harlequin cot blanket. Yay! I was trying to work on this exclusively so I could get a fair idea of how much time these take to make, but as usual, a couple of other projects needed attention, so I have a rough idea only.
I am having a lot of fun with this pattern, and I love the tapestry crochet technique, it will probably be boring for you guys, but I think I will make another one of these in a different colour scheme.

I am thinking about writing this pattern up and making 'blanket kits' with all the wool and instructions in them and selling them in my shop. What do you think?

Anyhoo, that's a little catch up from round these parts, have you been doing anything special?
What do you think about advertising on blogs?
Have you got any on yours?
What are you making at the moment?

Talk soon.

New year, new/old blanket love

Hello.
So, back to a bit of crafty news after all the New Year festivities are over,
I have been busy with the crochet hook recently, I love how through the holiday period I can craft at leisure, and during the day!
I am still a bit in love with the harlequin pattern, and am making a blanket using the tapestry crochet technique.  Pretty much the same as my washcloths but made in 8ply wool and a fair bit bigger!  I am using hdcs instead of sc to give a more diamond shape.
This is hooking up nice and quickly so I hope to have it finished soon.

Lots of colour here, nice and bright and cheery......

I am liking the bit of orange, I was going for a bit of a carnival look and I think it helps.

....It will probably end up roughly cot sized once I add a border ......

.....I dragged out the other diamond blanket I have on the go, quite a different process and far more time consuming, but I like the patchworky effect of sewing all the diamonds together......then again, I like the flatness of the tapestry technique too.  Must try and get this one finished too.......

I should have some time over the weekend to do some more on these, so hopefully something finished to show you all soon!

Have you been doing any holiday hooky?

Crochet Washcloths, so hip!!

Hello!

We are starting two weeks of school holidays here, so looking forward to a break in our usual routines, hopefully we will have a lot of fun days, relaxing doing what we like.

This morning I sat down and weaved all the ends in on my little washcloths.  It was time for some photos!  So here they are, humble washcloths, little woollie style!

A couple of these have already found a new home, far away across the ocean, how exciting!

**Thanks to my very obliging helpers here, a little glimpse *behind the scenes* at our headquarters. :)
(Although it turned into a bit of a tug of war with washcloths flapping around all over the place very soon after this was taken:) )

Anyway, I am pretty happy with how these turned out, very easy, and I think a cute present with some nice soap or something like that.  A good start to my Handmade Christmas effort.

What have you been up to this weekend?
Had some fun times?

xxxxxx

(ps. A few lovely people were wondering how to to the dotty pattern, I will try and clean up my scribbles and post a photo of the dot graph for the tapestry crochet technique:) )

Edited to add:  I now have a pattern available for these washcloths as well as the hearts and clouds ones. If you are interested they are for sale on Ravelry over here!

Tapestry Crochet - Harlequin Pattern Tutorial

Hello!

So today I thought I'd chat a bit about the very cool crochet technique called tapestry crochet.
Tapestry crochet allows you to create a piece of crochet that plays with colour changes and flat patterns.
You use two coloured pieces of yarn and crochet over the colour not in use, so you can alternate between two colour as the pattern requires.
That is pretty much it in a nut shell, so if you know how to crochet, draw up a pattern on graph paper and give it a try!
Tapestry crochet creates a nice thick fabric, and you can be very creative with the patterns.  I am thinking of lots of things I could make using this technique! More on that later!

A few people asked for a pattern, so if you want a bit more detail, I have done a little tutorial and step by step guide, I hope it doesn't get too confusing.

So this is how I made my basic harlequin pattern:

Firstly, I used graph paper to draw up my pattern, as you can see it's very simple!

Each square represents 1 sc stitch.

My harlequin squares are 13 stitches wide, if you wanted a bigger square you could continue increasing by 2 stitches each row until you get the size you want ( i.e., 15, 17, 19, 21 stitches wide, etc)

This is a repeating pattern, so you can make your piece as wide as you like depending on the number of repeats you do.

I am doing 3 repeats, so the first row of my pattern is 6, 1, 13, 1, 13, 1, 6  = 41 chains to start.

So chain 41 in first colour (pink) then lay the second colour (blue) across the yarn (see above) and ch 1 in pink to trap the blue yarn in the st so it is ready to be carried along the top of the row.

Sc the first 6 st according to the pattern going over the blue yarn, when you get to the last pink st, change to blue to complete the st, so you are ready to use blue for the next st.

ready to do a blue st!
 .

(This is how you change colours throughout the pattern, the stitch before the changed colour, you finish off with the new colour and then proceed in the next stitch with the right colour.  I hope that makes sense, and I''m not too confusing!)

Then you continue on with 1 blue st and 13 pink st, and so on, changing colours as needed and crocheting over the unused colour.

....this is how the first row looks at the end.....

.....bring the unused colour across front of work and 1 ch in pink, then turn work and start the second row, reading the pattern from left to right for every wrong side (even numbered) row, and right to left for odd numbered front side rows.

You get a nice neat edge by trapping the unused yarn at each turn.

...you can see the pattern forming.....so just continue changing from pink to blue and blue to pink as needed.......

....at the last row with 13 blue st, change the colour from pink to blue in the last stitch of the previous row, then trap the pink wool and ch and turn,  so you are able to do blue stitches from the start of the row

......here is what it looks like half way through the pattern, now we just mirror the pattern that we have  done to form the top half of the squares.

At this point you can change the pink wool to a different colour if you want to have different colours for all you rows of squares, like I have done below, or you can continue on with the pink and blue to create a checkered effect.

This is just a very basic guide to tapestry crochet, but I hope you can see it's creative possibilities, I think it could be used for many lovely projects, I am planning a harlequin cot blanket and I think it would make great face washers and potholders in cotton, I will be trying out some different patterns for those I think. (Also cushions, bags, purses, hotwater bottle covers......I could go on and on!)

Anyway, that's it for now, if you do have a go at this and find problems with my instructions, please let me know and I will try and fix them up.

Have a great weekend!

xxxxxx

Edited to add:  If you would like to have a go at a spotty pattern for tapestry crochet I have another post over here with a graph for spots.  xx

Harlequin

Over the weekend I found a bit of time for some creative crochet, just something for fun, working with colour and pattern, it felt really good.  I was trying to come up with a bit of a harlequin pattern that didn't involve sewing pieces together, I couldn't find a pattern online, so had a bit of a play myself.

Often I just think about these type of things, and never get around to trying out ideas,  but this time I got out the hook and wool and a pencil and paper and had a go.  I know it's not all that original and I'm sure it has been done heaps of times, but it is satisfying working out a solution to a problem on your own, even if you get the same answer as everyone else!

I am making a few little colour swatches of some new yarn in my shop (more on that another day) there are lovely vivid colours and I want to try out some different combos, I think this harlequin pattern is a nice way to play with colour.

I an really enjoying seeing how each colour looks as part of this pattern, I think a full blown harlequin blanket might be somewhere in my crafty future!  If only there were a few more hours in the day......

What did you get up to on the weekend, anything fun? Crafty?
Do you like harlequin patterns too?
