Feathered friends

Please excuse messy, weedy garden beds, I have big plans for them very soon!

Hello.
How's your weekend been going?
We have had a good one, Andre had his friends around for a birthday gaming marathon on Friday night, they did manage a few hours sleep so it was all good.
Last night I had dinner with a bunch of local girls, lots of food and chatting and a great evening catching up with some lovely ladies.  Also had a few glasses of some delicious pear cider, think I've found my new poison! haha...

Anyway, we went out today for fish and chips in Sorrento, and when we arrived home I found we had a feathered visitor.  This gorgeous girl had flown into our backyard and wanted to make friends with our chookies.

She took quite a while figuring out how to join the girls in their yard, but eventually she gathered her courage and flew over the fence....honking loudly...

..... unfortunately my girls have very bad manners and did all they could to stay as far away as possible to their exotic interloper.

Such a pretty girl! (at least, I think she is a girl)

Look at her beautiful feathers and such vibrant blues ...........

her tail feathers were spectacular.....

....my chookies were feeling a bit like the country mice in their brown speckled feathers, and were most put out as our colourful friend outstayed her welcome.  There was much disapproving clucking.
They retreated to the hen house and answered her sad honks with ignore.  I had lots of fun taking pictures of the pretty thing.

The penhen (I think this is what she is) was a lovely bird, wandering around the chicken yard until the girls were locked up for the night, I think she got lonely then, so flew up onto our roof, maybe to roost for the night.

I hope she is still around here in the morning, such a welcome visitor, she really brightened up our garden.  We have been here for 15 years and have never seen a peacock fly in before.  I wonder here she came from.

I hope you have unexpected visitors brighten your day too!

  1. I think it was a pea'cock', perhaps juvenile as it looks like the tail feathers are coming in. I don't think the females don't get the brilliant blue coloring...drabber without the topknot. But still beautiful. Wonder whose he is? Some young 'buck' looking for girls and a little confused about species? lol Helen

    1. Hi helen, thanks for the peacock info, wasn't sure what the girls looked like but that makes sense that it was a young male, I've never seen birds like this around here so wasn't sure whether it was girl or boy! He was very pretty though! :) Julie

  2. Male peacocks are the pretty ones (it's usually like that in the bird world) so I'm afriad it was a male visitor eyes up you hens!

  3. Hi G.T.M.T.C I think he was a bit lost, but he was very lovely, I should have known he was too pretty to be a girl, I wonder how long it takes for their tail feathers to grow to their full splendour? Thanks for visiting, :) Julie

  4. Oh what a beauty! I agree it seems to be a peacock rather than a peahen, but nonetheless, such a handsome visitor. Game your crooks weren't impressed!

  8. What a lovely suprise! Peacocks are beautiful birds. That must have been a suprise for your chickens as well! My chickens mingle quite happily with the visiting pheasants we have in the garden but i'm not sure how they would feel about a peacock!

  11. Poor peacock - yes definitely a male - looking for some love. they dont tend to be loners they like to have a harem, even if it is chookies. we have have many peacocks and other birds and they all mix together as one big birdie family. they drop there tails naturally each year (and you find them strewn all round the place) this guy looks like he is on the process of growing his new ones in.they do roost at night - ours roost in a pine tree plantation but they definitely get on the roof (usually for some early morning race track action.
    Love the painted fence!!

  13. He's gorgeous, but I'm not surprised your girls weren't too sure about him - turning up all flashy expecting to be admired and made cups of tea (or whatever the bird equivalent is).

  14. They can be noisy creatures! We once had one hanging round in the village where we used to live and it used to sit on people's roof.

  15. As the others have said that's a male Peacock, the peahens don't have the bright markings. We had about 12, both male and female, come through our place recently. We hear them often, wild and classed as a nuisance here, the males are rather glorious though.

  19. We have a 'fly in' peahen also. She has stayed about 4 mths so far and seems quite settled. Your photos are gorgeous - the male colours are spectacular aren't they. Ours has bunkered down quite nicely and sleeps in a tree near the hens. Shows no sign of leaving and seems to hang around with the bantams the most! cheers Wendy

  23. She's beautiful! Living in Southern Indiana in the US, the most spectacular bird to come to my house was a hummingbird! We do have several snow geese that nest down the street by the lake...Thank you for sharing these gorgeous pictures!
